Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I take dance lessons?
You"ll find learning to dance - like dancing itself - is filled with fun and delight. As you master this ageless art form you will feel the pride of accomplishment - and you will realize the countless physical, social and esthetic qualities that dancing holds.
Some of the many physical benefits dancing offers are exercise, increased flexibility, and co-ordination. Faster dances such as Swing, Chacha, and Salsa provide aerobic exercise, while dances such as Waltz, Tango, and Rumba provide increased muscle tone and control. You also may find that through dancing your posture and self confidence improve.
Besides the physical benefits, dance provides many other benefits such as relaxation, stress relief, and creative outlet. Dancing is a great way to meet new acquaintances or is a great hobby to share with your partner. You'll never have to sit out at a social function again.
Do I need a partner?
Partners are welcome but are not required. In private lessons your teacher can double as your partner. Meanwhile, you can enjoy a variety of partners at the group classes and practice parties.
How long will it take to learn to dance?
The length of time it will take to learn to dance varries depending on the individual, how good of a dancer you would like to be, and frequency of lessons. Keeping your lessons as close together as possible reduces the amount of review and repition time required and increases your rate of learning. You will be happier with the results and you'll be up on the dance floor much sooner and having fun.
Would it be better to learn one dance really well before going on to another?
No. Learning one dance at a time is not only the hardest, but also the slowest way to learn. Good dancing is not one dance or the other, but a form of art accomplished by learning several things...smoothness, balance, animation, control, sharpness, posture, lead & follow, and flexibility. Take smoothness for example. Being comfortable with your partner is very important and this is something everyone would like to have. Foxtrot is the best dance to learn smoothness. You may become smooth in Foxtrot in a little as 4 hours whereas to accomplish this in swing may take 10 or more hours. Your smoothness in Foxtrot will automatically transfer to your swing and other dances. Since each dance has an area of emphasis, using the interrelated system of learning will make you a better and more well rounded dancer much sooner.
